Octagonal tankard. Made in Moscow for Tsar Alexander III in 1889-90. Gilded silver, multicolor cloisonné and plique-à-jour enamel tankard. Decorated with a design of scrolling foliage with a plique-à-jour enamel scene of an eagle fighting a serpent. Design taken from a Turkish-made enamel tankard with a coiled-serpent handle that had been a gift to Tsar of Muscovy and was preserved in the Kremlin Armory that was included in Solntsev’s Antiquities of the Russian State, published in the mid 19th century.
