How the ancients really lived. Plates from Wilhelm Zahn and Otto Jahn’s 1828 work “Die schönsten Ornamente und merkwürdigsten Gemälde aus Pompeji, Herculanum und Stabiae” which was published in Berlin. All of these being Pompeii decor.

  1. I am looking for the lithographs from the Alexander mosaic by Wilhelm Zahn.
It should be in Vol. 2 of: Die schönsten Ornamente … etc
Do you have a digitized picture and location in the book?

    1. Hi the University of Heidelberg has Volume II I am looking through it for you. – I wrote a second reply with the link I found. The software here won’t let me attach a digitalized image but if you click through the link in the other reply you can save it as a JPEG image to your computer. If that doesn’t work please email me sabagup@yahoo.com and I’ll send you the image. Sarah.

    2. Hi i went plate by plate through Volume II and didn’t spot anything from the House of the Faun but it has lithographs of mosaics that are just labeled Pompeii or Herculaneum with no further information. From what I have found the House of the Faun was originally called the House of Goethe. Under that I have found this https://archive.org/details/gri_33125008763142/page/n146/mode/1up which is captioned: Pompeii, in der Casa del Grand Mosaico (Casa de Goethe) ausgegraben 1830 but the page has handwritten notes in pencil, too. One of the notes cites one of Zahn’s other works and the lithograph matches except for the color a lithograph Alamy’s got that is after one by Zahn so I think the same one so yes from the House of the Faun which is how Alamy has it labeled https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-mosaics-from-the-house-of-the-faun-casa-del-fauno-pompeii-excavated-90631518.html

and here and here https://archive.org/details/schoYnstenOrnam00Zahn/page/III-26/mode/1up (upper image).
