Neo-Renaissance hand-fans decorated by French artist Edouard Moreau. Living from 1825 to 1878, he designed and decorated fans for Maison Alexandre and their competitors. Not just the leaves, he decorated up the sticks and guards, too.

Skating Party folding fan, the guards richly carved with Neo-Renaissance ornaments, the sticks partly fretted and painted en grisaille with groups of figures representing Love and Marriage. The leaf is painted on the recto with three winter-themed, scenes, the principal one being a 16th century skating party. The surrounding parts of the leaf are painted gold and further enhanced with stylized borders and Classical grotesques. 1865. French. Ivory and gouache on paper. Hand painted fan with carved mother-of-pearl guards and painted sticks, the leaf painted with 17th and 18th century love scenes. Signed Moreau in a panel of a couple dancing at a military camp at right and dated Edouard Moreau Pinx 1866 at center. Chateau in a wooded landscape painted on the verso (back). Fan, the skin leaf delicately painted on a gold Hand-fan in the style of Edouard Moreau, the skin leaf delicately painted on a a gold background with four scenes of gallantry from the 15th to the 18th century. From left to right: a gallant dressed in Renaissance fashion tries to entertain two beauties by showing his skills at the ball and ball table; two 16th century gentlemen test their courage by challenging each other to a sword duel on a full moon evening; a hunter in Molière’s time shows his fidelity and loyalty to his family by hunting game for them; finally a gallant from the Age of Enlightenment enchants his companion by playing her music. The scenes are separated by caryatids with the effigy of the god Pan painted in silver and support medallions in shades of blue depicting cherubs playing and warring. One of the scenes is signed G. Le Doux whose work was strongly influenced by that of Édouard Moreau. Mother-of-pearl frame, finely carved, pierced, engraved, and applied with gold and silver leaves and burgau decorated with dancing nymphs, putti, doves, flaming hearts and medallions decorated with figures of women wearing crown of flowers and men with feathered turbans. ca. 1860.
