smouldering on air as the black cats in the tops of the trees in the silhouettes on the wall in the back of the abandoned lyceum inch into life . . . a stretch and yowl and leaping out into the room . . . a witch to look for and a familiar to be . . . but where . . . oh yes . . . the fireplace upstairs and up the chimney and over the world . . . hisses to make and dogs to claw . . . back before daybreak or maybe never . . .
