squealing on air on the gleam of a moonbeam as it sets down over the Baltic . . . Hamburg with its dormitories for those waiting for the next steamer to head to America and an amusement planned somewhere near one of the churches . . . dining hall filled with pine boughs and girls in dirndls with glasses of beer . . . musicians on the stage with songs of Russia and Romania . . . gone in the morning but here for now with one foot in one place and the other inching towards the next . . .
