Large gilt brass bracket or mantel clock, the case, with engraved floral decoration and applied colored cabochon jewel mounts, encloses a gilt 7″ Roman dial with a finely scroll engraved center and an eight day spring driven movement with anchor escapement chiming the quarters on a nest of two bells. ca. 1870. Gothic Revival. French. The movement having been made in Saint Nicolas d’ Aliermont, by Pierre-Honoré-César Pons and then finished by the Parisian Clock maker, Louis Achille Brocot. Gilt shelf clock in the form of the west facade of Reims Cathedral. The case of finely detailed cast and fire gilt bronze. The dial of twelve porcelain Roman numeral chapters is in the rose window opening. Blued steel sunburst hands, spring-powered, eight-day time and strike movement that has a silk thread suspension and external count-wheel, the gong mounted in the inlaid wooden plinth being controlled by the movement. ca. 1835. Clocks that could almost double as sculptures by Dutch artisan J. C. Stoffels, a member of the Nieuwe Kunst movement, the Dutch take on Art Nouveau. Magnificent and so much more interesting than those round things they had on the wall in school.
