As with so many of these, they would have chromolithographs or other types of prints done up to sell after the expedition ended. Sometimes they would then turn the prints into a book. Sometimes not. Some of these are in the New York Public Library collections but these images are from the Internet Archive who appear to have more of them. The expedition itself was in 1853.

Envisionings of ancient interiors supposedly located in Pompeii, Ancient Greece and somewhere along the Ancient Egyptian Nile. In the collections of the New York Public Library as part of their Ancient Interiors collection. Published by different people but they all have that 1870-1910 ish look.

I didn’t find this one by myself, either. Someone I’m following on Mastodon posted a lithograph from a later edition.

Hand-colored lithographs of anthropomorphic flowers illustrating the “values” and roles of women in 1849. Taken from “El Album Mexicano. Periódico de literatura, artes y bellas letras,” a Mexican literary magazine that was published in Mexico City. Edited by Ignacio Cumplido. These are from one item that is up for sale on the website of Michael Laird Rare books.

These are from the time of the short-lived Mexican empire with Emperor Maximilian and his Empress Carlota that was in reality a project of/controlled by Napoleon III of France that ended up with Maximilian in front of a firing squad. This explains why these are published in Mexico City with the lithographs done presumably in France etc.

Off to see the world back in 1822. Anyone setting out on an expedition big or small would hire an artist the way you’d get a photographer now. Audubon signed on as expedition artist on at least one expedition to the Ohio Territories to help get up the money for “Birds of America.”

View of the Great Pyramids of Giza. British. Hand colored lithograph with the view having been drawn by David Roberts in 1839 and lithographed by Louis Haghe in 1842. It is very possible that the View of the Great Pyramids of Giza added today is from the same collection as the other ones in this blog post. They would release the lithographs one by one over the course of a few years and then put together all or most of them as a portfolio or book to sell separately so hard to get an exact date on them. 1840s for sure.

Color lithographic posters by some of the leading lights of European art . . .some from before World War I sucked the joy out and a few after . . .
