What did the espresso bar look like on the Normandie?
Not sure but I’ve got links to scans of their brochures and will look. Not sure they had espresso bars in the 1930s but maybe. And thank for asking. Sarah.
Perhaps a year or so ago a commentary made reference to an espresso bar at or near the stern . Evidently cookies were served with or after . There are photographs of an area ( without people ) that may be the location having a sweep of floor to ceiling windows . The holy grail would be any shot or documentation of equipment used . One just can’t help wondering and trying to visualize this experience as the morning’s ritual wake-up .
My roommate tells me the SS Normandie was launched on my birthday ( the month and date – not the year ) May 29th .
All summer here in Winnipeg Canada we setup table chairs and tiny food cart on a sixty foot long fire escape balcony at the back of the hundred plus year old block where we live . Imaging a similar setup on Normandie seems inevitable fun and useful as reference and reminds one of an Aunt who referenced a detailed trans Canada trip by rail every day at the dining table to keep me and my young cousin amused and focused . ” where are we now Aunt Reta ? ” .
Hi. I haven’t forgotten you. WordPress would not let me post my reply. There appears to have been only one brochure for the Normandie that survived. I am still looking for a scanned version of the entire brochure to look through for an espresso bar. The Cooper Hewitt has a copy of it but I am in Boston, not New York. I have messaged someone I follow on Instagram who posts images from brochures of trans Atlantic steamers but have not heard back. I’m still looking for scans and hope they turn up soon. Perhaps it’s never seemed to be more true a thing of beauty is a joy forever. This ship remains sustaining in it’s all out commitment to celebrating life’s potential beauty .
( Not with standing I recall that I’ve managed to misspell my Aunt Rita’s name in my previous post )
oh it does. The Normandie is just perfect-
