I didn’t find this one. Rob Stephenson who writes on Substack at https://theneighborhoods.substack.com/ did. I am doing my best not to use the same pictures. If you are interested in New York City history please check out his work. I found this album in this, his latest post https://theneighborhoods.substack.com/p/edenwald-the-bronx?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=1520650&post_id=176917523&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=kbn1g&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email

Visions of Bonwit Teller from an early 1950 photo shoot. Corset shop, bridal salon and lots more. Why Bonwit Teller? First I couldn’t find anything from I Magnin. Second my mother worked the Christmas rush at Bonwit’s in New York as a college girl selling baby clothes. She went broke shopping with her employee discount spending far more than she got paid.

I found this image on Old USA on Facebook but I found it over on Threads in the account of Clare.rolfzen who states that: Saint Paul, Minnesota holds a Winter Carnival every winter. This is a photo of one of the ice Castles for the carnival. They are not constructed every year and they aren’t all lighted. This is a favorite of mine! From Life in Minnesota.

Out for the day visiting “Jumbo the Walnut Elephant.” Jumbo was an exhibit from the 1893 World’s Fair that was later displayed in Los Angeles, California, in the 1920s. Created by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Jumbo was made of 850 pounds of walnuts on a wire frame.

Frank Wiggins, the superintendent of events for the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, conceived of the idea to create a larger than life sized “walnut elephant” that was to be displayed at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. 850 pounds of unusually large California walnuts were needed to cover the wire framework used to create this famous pachyderm. Needless to say, it achieved lasting fame for the city and the Chamber.

A “Pageant of Democracy,” celebrating the history and promise of democracy across the globe, was performed in Woodland Park as part of Seattle’s 1920 Fourth of July celebrations held on Monday, July 5. The event was one of several put on by the Central Labor Council in Woodland Park that day. Nearly all of those taking part in the “Pageant of Democracy” were members of organized labor unions. One scene from the pageant depicted all 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, dressed in wigs and colonial era dress; other scenes showed performers dressed as historical, allegorical and everyday figures related to the history of democracy, such as Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln, an ancient Greek, and ordinary people of various cultures. Nineteen nationalities joined in the closing scene of the pageant, titled “World Democracy for All.”

Not sure how this ended up in the collections of a Polish university but I’m thinking that someone went on a trip to Berlin in 1910, bought this book as a souvenir and then brought it home and stuck it in their bookcase where their descendants later found it and donated it.
