Pochoir prints from “Le Livre de la vérité de la Parole.” A limited edition of only 150, this was a set of plates sold in a slip case. There were 106 plates in black and white and color along with other plates, and a text drawn from ancient Egyptian writings by Joseph Charles Mardrus. François-Louis Schmied did the plates. It was printed in Paris in 1929.
Dropped capitals, page decorations that are Art Nouveau in time but look rather more Medieval. Taken from Friedrich Hottenroth’s 1896 tome “Le costume, les armes, les bijoux, la céramique, les ustensiles, outils, objets mobiliers, etc. : chez les peuples anciens et modernes” which was published in Paris in 1896 by A. Guérinet.
Animals in India. Taken from Captain Thomas Williamson and Samuel Howitt’s “Oriental Field Sports” which was printed in London in 1807.
An India that’s a hop, skip, and jump away. Plates from Robert Montgomery Martin’s 1858 work about India. Martin wrote several books dealing with various parts of the British Empire.
Seashells from 1811 that look just like the ones on the beach, taken from George Brown’s “The Elements of Conchology, or, Natural History of Shells” which was published in London in 1816. All the plates being signed by George Brown and Robert Scott.
Plates depicting 17th century animals, all of these having lived on Spitzbergen (Spitsbergen) which is located between Norway and the North Pole. Taken from Friedrich Marten’s 1671 work on the subject which was published in Hamburg in 1675.
Time to go salmon fishing again. More plates from George M. Kelson’s work “The Salmon Fly: How to Dress it and How to Use It” which was published in London in 1895.
Flowers, some with blue berries. Plates from Pierre-Joseph Redoute’s 1802 work “Les Liliacees” which was printed in Paris. Redoute made colored drawings of the roses of the Empress Josephine, too.
